The biggest difference between playing the catcher position and every other position on the baseball diamond is the point of view that catchers have to field.

The other eight positions on the field all face the batter. But for the catcher, he plays behind the batter allowing for the techniques he needs to field certain baseballs different from those of other players.

One situation where a catcher’s technique is different from others is when he’s trying to catch a foul pop fly baseball. For infielders and outfielders, a fly ball hit in their direction basically does what it’s supposed to do. It goes up, it travels in the direction of the infielder or outfielder and then it comes down. But when a fly ball is hit in the direction of the catcher, his technique will vary vastly from that of an infielder or outfielder.

Kevin McMullan played in the New York Yankees organization before becoming a coach in the Atlanta Braves organization. Currently, he is an assistant coach for the University of Virginia baseball team where he deals directly with the catchers among other areas.

McMullan has taught several young catchers the technique of fielding a pop fly and said it all starts from knowing the batter.

“I have always said that wherever the open side is the catcher should turn that way first,” he said. “From a left handed hitter when the ball goes up in the air, open to your left.”

One of the biggest tips for catching a pop fly hit straight up in the air from the catcher position is to remember that the ball will spin back towards the infield. So in order to get in a better fielding position the catcher should turn his back to the infield to help read the backspin of the baseball.

“In a perfect world you have your back to the infield, but a lot of it depends on where the ball is hit,” McMullan said. “However, you never want to get yourself directly under the ball. You would like to be behind it where the ball is out in front of your eyes and you can work your way back at sort of a 45 degree angle.”

Situations that may prevent the catcher from getting in the proper fielding position might be on pop fly balls hit back in foul territory. It is a little more difficult to get behind, but McMullan said that there are certain techniques that can help in foul situations as well.

“If it’s hit toward the first base or third base dugout, you might need to get at an angle,” he said. “If it’s behind you, you’ll want to get your back toward the infield.”

In addition to getting your body in proper fielding position, the catcher should be aware of what he should do with his catcher’s mask. McMullan said that what the catcher should do with his mask depends on if the baseball is landing near the hitting circle at the plate.

“If the ball is in the hitting circle, the mask gets out of the circle,” he said. “If the ball is out of the circle, the mask stays in the circle. At the peak of the ball and sometimes with those medium ones, you’ll have time to throw your mask down. Ideally you can make that decision when the ball is at the top of its apex.”

By far and away the position of catching within the baseball or softball field may be the most exclusive task from any activity on the planet. Not only is the player playing behind the plate accountable for getting whatever variety of throw tossed at them, but they’re generally thought of as a 2nd manager within the field responsible for the management of player positioning. All of this happens whilst being required to keep in an uneasy crouched placement in back of home plate. Growing to be a top grade catcher may be a hard and fulfilling experience. The following write-up really helps to clarify the capabilities that a number of the greatest catchers in the industry utilize each individual game and practice.

Certainly one of the main tasks belonging to the catcher would be to catch the pitches tossed by way of the pitcher. The experience of baseball is without a doubt unique as you’ll find numerous human components included in deciding the actual end result of the match like the umpires. Numerous umpires could hand out strikes to pitches which were thrown at elevated regions, where numerous possess a broader strike region. The catcher is often the initial participant on the field that realizes these types of tendencies, and often will use them to assist the pitcher with his particular pitch selection. A number of the most effective catchers on the globe have become great with a technique called framing which transpires when a catcher presents the false impression that the baseball is thrown to a good place by keeping his mitt inside the strike zone.

The catcher also needs to exhibit management and intellect skills around the diamond. Stated previously, most catchers at some point function like a 2nd manager around the field as they are willing to assist in the positioning of different players within the field and for relaying the types of pitches thrown from the pitcher. You will discover certainly no two people who are exactly the same on the earth and for that reason every single pitcher which the catcher performs with will show various styles. Certain pitchers tend to be more intense while other people continue to be relatively quiet. An ideal catcher has found out how you can read a person within an individual level and employs their competencies and qualities in the most effective way for any group.

Beyond the overall game managing and catching tasks undertaken by the catcher, you will also find several defensive responsibilities which a catcher could do just about every game. Like other individuals, the catcher must have the skills to control pop flys, balls hit just in front of the plate, and tagging out runners when ever needed. The catcher also provides a number of different defensive tasks including firing out runners seeking to advance one more spot, preventing passed balls, and protecting home plate that will stop a runner from scoring.

Still excited about becoming a catcher? In that case, don’t forget to add some gear. This particular Catchers Gear Sets ?nternet site offers many great equipment options such as complete sets coming from many of the very best product names inside the entire business. Have fun catching!

Swinging late is a very common baseball hitting problem, especially with younger players. There are some very good baseball tips on hitting as to what you must do and what you should never do that will help you out. What you do with your front elbow is critical!

When looking to solve a baseball hitting problem, always look for the easiest fix first. Here is a list of some possible solutions if you are swinging late and not catching up to the pitch.

1. Make sure you are not using a bat that is too heavy for you. That’s the easiest fix of all. If we didn’t luck out that easily, let’s go in a little deeper.

2. Make sure you are “loading up” early enough and giving yourself enough time to get the bat into the hitting zone. You never want to load up late so if needed, load up earlier. I’ve seen many 10 to 12 year olds going back toward the catcher when the pitch is already on its way. This makes hitting the ball impossible. Watch for this with younger players. I’ve seen it many times.

3. Many youngsters in particular, have the bad habit of loading up twice. You go back once, not twice. They load up once and then they make the common mistake of loading up a little bit more. You simply cannot be going back toward the catcher when the pitch is on its way.

4. You are possibly taking too long a route to the ball. Be more direct when going from point A, where you are loaded up, to point B, where you make contact. “Take the shortest route to granny’s house.”

5. One of my top three baseball tips on hitting is the first movement after you are loaded up should be down toward the baseball and the bat should level out only at the point of contact. Many weak hitters have the bat parallel to the ground at the very beginning of the swing and this is wrong and will present many baseball hitting problems.

If the first movement is not downward, it will create the slightest loop in your swing and you will lose a valuable fraction of a second. A fraction of a second is an eternity when it comes to baseball hitting!

6. Another possibility for being late is the bottom of the knob of the bat is facing too far back toward the catcher. This will cause the bat to have to travel a much greater distance to get to the ball and make you late on your swing. The same holds true if the bat is wrapped too far around your head.

7. You don’t want to have your hands too far away from the body, which causes the front arm to straighten out too soon. This will cause a longer and indirect swing, causing you to be late on the pitch.

8. Maybe the bat is being held too much straight up and down. If you are doing this, try a compromise of half way between straight up and down and parallel to the ground.

9. Maybe you are gripping the bat too tightly. It’s a known fact that you can swing the bat more efficiently and quicker by not gripping it too tightly. It’s the same exact principle as a pitcher gripping the ball tighter to slow down the speed of the pitch to fool the hitter. Gripping the bat too tightly will slow down your bat speed just like it slows down a pitch from the pitcher.

Remember, one of the best baseball tips on hitting you will ever learn is to keep the front elbow pointing down at the very start of your swing. The swing levels out ONLY at the point of contact. If you are NOT doing this, make this adjustment and your hitting will improve immediately! There is simply no substitute for being “quick to the ball.” It is the only possible way for 95 m.p.h. fast balls to leave the “yard” and not make it to the catcher’s mitt!

Does your batting average need a lift? Here’s what the pros have to say about improving your hitting!

Hitting Tips – Use a Tee and Wiffle Ball
This might sound like a silly way to improve your hitting, but this is the exact exercise Hall of Fame player Tony Gwynn used to practice every offseason. The eight-time National League batting champion would hit a wiffle ball off a tee about a hundred times a day. This drill will improve your technique and consistency. Tony says that the sooner you can hit a wiffle ball off a tee cleanly, the sooner you’ll become a better hitter. You should hear air going through the wiffle ball if you’re hitting the ball correctly. Tony says hitting a wiffle ball properly is like hitting a knuckleball.

Hitting Tips – The Ideal Hitter
The late Cal Ripken Sr. was a legendary coach, as well as the father of one of the greatest players in the history of baseball, Cal Ripken Jr. The elder Ripken advises that if you’re going to be a good hitter, you have to select a bat that you can handle. You should also learn the strike zone so you won’t swing at bad pitches. Keep your head still and focus on the pitcher – don’t look at your nose. The former Baltimore Orioles coach also says the ideal hitter will have the following qualities – strength, determination, coordination, vision, rhythm, style, body control and the will to learn and to take advice.

Hitting Tips – Concentrate
Manny Mota was a career .300 hitter during the sixties and seventies. He says the key to being a successful hitter is concentration. You have to approach the plate with the attitude that you are going to get a hit. You want to be aggressive at the plate – but make sure you stay cool and relaxed. Also use quick hands. Mota says taking a short stride will help your hands get quicker and that will result in a more compact and controlled swing. But Mota’s most valuable advice is to concentrate on hitting the ball up the middle. If you have that mentality, you will be able to adjust your swing to hit the ball wherever it is pitched.
